The difference is in the concentration
Every perfume consists of fragrance oil dissolved in alcohol. The name on the bottle tells you how much fragrance oil it contains. The more fragrance oil, the richer and usually the longer-lasting the perfume.
| Type | Fragrance oil (guideline) | Character |
|---|---|---|
| Eau de toilette | roughly 5 to 15% | Light, fresh, ideal for daytime and warm days |
| Eau de parfum | roughly 15 to 20% | Balanced, versatile, the classic choice |
| Extrait de parfum | roughly 20 to 40% | Rich, deep, stays on the skin the longest |
These are guideline values: the exact percentages differ per perfume house and there is no legal classification.
Which do you choose?
- Eau de toilette if you want a light fragrance that does not impose.
- Eau de parfum if you want one perfume for every moment.
- Extrait de parfum if you want an intense fragrance that lasts and of which a small amount is enough.
Concentration and price
A higher concentration means more expensive fragrance oil per bottle. That is why extraits are usually more expensive than an eau de toilette from the same house. You do use less each time.
